Someone told me once that driving on the right side means you drop off passengers on the curb, rather than letting them out into the street. Therefore we were more courteous. I tried to explain that you lot do the same thing, because driving on the right side of the car and down the left lane, passengers step out on the curb too. They didn't get it. It made me sad for them.
I once read that on the continent, the Church wanted people to walk on the right side, to avoid people getting into swordfights. Then, when Henry VIII Tudor split from the Roman Church, he changed the way people had to walk on the streets just to make it clear that he wasn't following the church's directions.
