If you use the portable version, then the file association for .rmskin has not been created. This is fine. Just go to C:\Program Files\Rainmeter\Addons\Rainstaller and run Rainstaller.exe. Then browse to the .rmskin file you want to install.
I would recommend making a shortcut to Rainstaller.exe somewhere, so it is easier to get to when you want to install a skin. You also will be able to just drag a .rmskin and drop it on this shortcut to install a skin.
You can always create the file association for .rmskin to open with Rainstaller.exe of course, but for a "portable purist", this is heresy I suppose.

That calendar skin from Alex is so customizable, that it can look like just about anything you want. I would not be put off by the default look, as that is just one of literally thousands of ways you can configure it.

in the skin folder is a file names settings, open it with a text editor and play with the numbers, alex have done a very good explanation of what they are doing
