Hi guys! Well putting it flatly I am completely new to this.
This is my current desktop background in a screenshot.

I want to create a skin in which all I want to do is directly link to the individual programs in the top left of the screen (Except for 'Unused Items' - That's being moved from the desktop) to the pokeball buttons and then be able to hide the desktop icons.
I'd like someone to help talk me through how I can go about doing this, if they could be so kind. Thank you!

From your screenshot, I believe some variation of dock icons (launchers) should provide everything you want.
I would suggest looking at dock icons skins already created for Rainmeter on Deviantart that fit your style.
Doing a search for Rainmeter+Dock will produce over 4700 skins related to this...
