Not that I'm at all worried about us, but let this be a warning to nascent software platforms like Rainmeter: the Geek giveth, and the Geek taketh away...Lifehacker wrote:The popular Digsby instant messenger client not only bundles half a dozen "optional" crapware applications, it's also using your computer to crawl the web, do stock market research, and more. It's time to uninstall.

Read that yesterday. Digsby is now doomed, and so they should be. They really crossed the line with the well hidden feature of using your system in the background for their own purposes. The crapware you can almost excuse as it's easy to opt out if you are paying attention at all and they have to pay the bills somehow, but this other... wow.Kaelri wrote:Deservedly, in my opinion. Digsby has recently been getting heat all over the internet for their evolution toward shady practices. This article on one of the most popular sites out there should be the bullet to the back of the head.

I can't really completely condemn them, they did actually say they were going to do this on a blog post last December: http://blog.digsby.com/archives/68
And they made a response to all the flack they're getting now

How many users bother to read "blogs" for software they run though.MattKing wrote:I can't really completely condemn them, they did actually say they were going to do this on a blog post last December: http://blog.digsby.com/archives/68

Probably not many, though I had read it at the time. They we're pretty dumb about this honestly, I really do hate their installer but I think the shared computing idea is actually a cool idea.
I'd prefer if they said exactly what it was being used for and that it was being used for research only, not crawling and stock market crap.
I still like Digsby a lot though, its really easy to create your own Message Styles and they have a fairly detailed guide to skinning the app.

I got rid of it as soon as I saw their announcements spam trying to get people to vote for them in the Lifehacker Hive Five.
The announcements were annoying me enough without them attempting to skew polls in their favour.
