From what I understand of that article, it appears that they are heading in entirely the wrong direction as regards to the malware problem?

The task of moderating the galleries is not something that a volunteer should be doing -- it's something that we ALL should be doing by reporting inappropriate deviations to the attention of the CEA team, who are full time employees dedicated to working in this area.

That just sounds like they are removing everything but the "report" button for end users and piling the entire responsibility of actual moderation on their rather limited support staff.

There is a nice little portable program that may help some people avoid this problem a bit. It's for identifying what file type something has when it is unknown, but I believe it can be used in this case as well. Running a quick scan against it's database can reveal the true filetype & maybe help people avoid double clicking on a fake rainmeter skin file that is actually an exe.

I dont know if it's being developed anymore, but I've used it a couple times. I like that it's portable.
