I think this is a good idea.

Meanwhile...

Can you use just some placeholder image first and then when your skin supposedly finds that an external image exists (through lua as you mentioned) the skin would replace the placeholder image with the external image?

It could be also done having two separate meters. Initially, the the placeholder image meter would be visible and the external image meter would be hidden. When the external image is detected, this would hide the placeholder image meter and show the external image meter.
