Weather Skins

Post by RandyD123 »

For the life of me, I can't get one single weather app to work. All other skins work perfectly. I have no firewall blocks, just none of them work. In Manchester NH.

The skins here and here should work (or, if you want to build your own, a good tutorial is presented here). They use various sites like weather.com, yahoo.com or foreca.com as sources for the data they are displaying. Older skins were based on a different format used by weather sites (specifically, weather.com) which is by now obsolete, which would explain why trying such skins doesn't produce the expected results, especially if their authors didn't update them to work in the current scenario. This is often the case if downloading the skins from other sites like visualskins.com and so on.

Note that in new weather skins, at least the ones using weather.com as data provider, you don't have to set the location but the geographical coordinates. Namely you have to set the geographical latitude and longitude of the point you'd like to get the weather information for. Skins using weather.com and having to set the location (a weather code similar to USNH0001 or something like this) definitely doesn't work anymore. What skin(s) are you trying to get working?

Just about any weather skin published before January 2022 is almost certain to fail, with rare exceptions. It's likely every skin you tried is older than that, especially if you were getting them from some rip-off websites that steal other people's work. All weather skins are heavily dependent on a weather data source/website to obtain their data, and virtually all providers have changed one or more times recently. Any skin that gets data by scraping a site's HTML page is especially fragile.

Alright, so problem fixed? Because rewriting the old skins is hard enough, not to worth.
