Web Development XAMPP flooded with Rainmeter access attempts

Post by gcsrain »

I run XAMPP locally on my PC for website development. It is the same computer that has Rainmeter installed (just recently installed). When I check my XAMPP Access Logs, they have loads of lines (95 at a time) of the same thing:
127.0.0.1 - - [21/Sep/2022:00:31:32 -0400] "GET /widget/rainmeter/weather-data.asp?Location=EUR|IT|IT015|PALERMO&metric=1 HTTP/1.1" 404 1070 "-" "Rainmeter WebParser plugin"
127.0.0.1 - - [21/Sep/2022:00:41:32 -0400] "GET /widget/rainmeter/weather-data.asp?Location=EUR|IT|IT015|PALERMO&metric=1 HTTP/1.1" 404 1070 "-" "Rainmeter WebParser plugin"

Rainmeter should not be attempting to access my local development server for any reason. Who can investigate this to ensure this is fixed?

I have no idea what XAMPP is, but by the looks of your messages, I would assume you are running some sort of weather skin.

127.0.0.1 is your local machine, so I suspect that either the XAMPP Access Logs are reporting any traffic on your local machine, or your weather skin isn't configured correctly. Either way, I can assure you that Rainmeter doesn't accesss anything you don't ask it to.

You can unload your weather skin and check again.

Having said that, are you getting errors in your log? Maybe try turning on Debug mode, and posting the contents of your log.

PS - I am moving this to the Help section, since this isn't a bug.

>"I have no idea what XAMPP is, but by the looks of your messages, I would assume you are running some sort of weather skin."
XAMPP is a cross-platform web server. XAMPP is a short form for Cross-Platform, Apache, MySQL, PHP, and Perl.

I am new to Rainmeter, but I have been a developer for over 45 years.

After installing Rainmeter, I tried several skins, and some did feature a weather feature, but I never was prompted to configure any, nor did I need a weather component. The skin I settled on did not have a weather component as far as I could tell, but I suspect that does but I had not loaded it. In the Control Panel, I did not see that any of the skins that had a weather component were "Loaded" either.

>"...or your weather skin isn't configured correctly."
I was never asked to configure any weather skin component. By default, the access is to the local server if there is one. Most users will not have one. Regardless, the default should not be to a local server. It is too risky for the developer (no telling what could be returned).

The reason I suspected the problem was a Rainmeter issue was because I did not have any weather skins loaded. Also, at the end of the two lines of examples, the "Rainmeter WebParser plugin" added to the idea, because I presumed it was a Rainmeter component. I don't know the internals of Rainmeter. My guess was that if the skin has a weather component, that maybe Rainmeter tests the configuration by issuing the weather component's first line that require the Rainmeter WebParser plugin, to see if the weather component is supposed to be loaded along with the rest of the skin. Of course, any data received would be dropped by Rainmeter so that the weather function could do its job when needed. All Rainmeter would need to know is, "should this component be loaded by default." Granted, that scenario is an extreme wild guess how Rainmeter might work internally.

>"the XAMPP Access Logs are reporting any traffic on your local machine"
Correct. That is their purpose, but external websites or other programs (or parts) are not supposed to attempt to access my server. Just like the two lines I listed have the start of the command that specified a directory, notice the directory name begins with a forward slash ("GET /widget/"). The forward slash at the start indicates the root directory of the local server. Occasionally, I come across the same type of errors due to a web developer creating an anchor (link) but leaves off the http(s) parts, and instead, start the URL with a forward slash. That works fine for them when developing on their own local webserver, but when that same page is loaded to public servers (Internet), they fail for all users, and without any explanation. For users such as myself that have their own server, most likely it would also fail, and get logged, but if I have something at the address they are accessing, it would be served back to the requester. I have informed some of those web developers, and when they do the full qualification of the URL, the local access attempt on my server no longer occurs.

If I was so inclined, I could place some code in the URL they are attempting to access, and the attempt would work, but what I put there could be mischievous code. How that developer handles the information from a GET would determine whether what they "GET" causes a problem, such as getting displayed to the public. People have taken advantage of bad coding by others to do all sorts of things. Imagine a family watching the weather on TV, and the software the station uses had the same sort of bad code, but someone hijacked what was returned and the station attempts to show a frontal storm view, but instead, it is a "frontal nude woman" view. Developers should always check their code and verify what they are accessing is correct.

I agree the code in the skin is probably the culprit. It would be nice if Rainmeter caught those types of errors.

Here is is, although keep in mind that I do not use any weather component, and have not attempted to configure anything.

Judging by your log, the skin Metal Gear Rising Animated Desktop\Iron man Prototype MK2\stats\stats.ini, specifically the MeasureWeatherRSS Webparser measure is the problem.

Here is an example of the weather website your skin is trying to fetch:
DBUG (18:03:08.522) Metal Gear Rising Animated Desktop\Iron man Prototype MK2\stats\stats.ini - [MeasureWeatherRSS]: Fetching: http://rainmeter.accu-weather.com/widget/rainmeter/weather-data.asp?Location=EUR|IT|IT015|PALERMO&metric=1
DBUG (18:03:08.527) Metal Gear Rising Animated Desktop\Iron man Prototype MK2\stats\stats.ini - [MeasureWeatherRSS]: Fetching: Success!

I suspect it is an older skin that no long works since it is trying to access http://rainmeter.accu-weather.com/ which hasn't worked since like 2009.

gcsrain wrote: September 22nd, 2022, 10:33 pm I was never asked to configure any weather skin component.
Rainmeter is just a platform to make skins. It isn't going to ask you anything like that. The skin author would have to make that happen.

gcsrain wrote: September 22nd, 2022, 10:33 pm Correct. That is their purpose, but external websites or other programs (or parts) are not supposed to attempt to access my server. Just like the two lines I listed have the start of the command that specified a directory, notice the directory name begins with a forward slash ("GET /widget/").
I could be wrong, I am not sure you are reading your logs correctly. This isn't Rainmeter trying to access your webserver. It is either 127.0.0.1 fetching something from accu-weather.com, or it accu-weather sending a GET request back to you. The "directory" you refer to is part of the URL from the skin.

gcsrain wrote: September 22nd, 2022, 10:33 pm I agree the code in the skin is probably the culprit. It would be nice if Rainmeter caught those types of errors.
It is most definitely the skin code, and Rainmeter did catch the errors...just not the one you think. It was a parsing error since the original webpage the skin tried to download no longer exists.

Since you are new to Rainmeter, I thought I would give you some links to help you get acquainted with Rainmeter.

Also, Rainmeter is open source, so you if you want to check any of the webparser stuff for yourself, here are some links:
