For those wishing to dabble in Rainmeter under WINE, I've added a better HOWTO, numbered, to the first message of this posting. It tends to better illustrate the steps required before a workable Rainmeter can be accomplished.

I honestly think your best route to providing the concept of rainmeter on linux is to use Python.

Expose it as a plugin for screenlets.

Features:

* Easy to use, easy to develop
* Full compositing support
* Works with any composited X desktop (compiz, xfce4, ...)
* Works also on non-composited desktop
* Included ability to apply themes (SVG, PNG or mixed)
* Fully scalable when using SVGs
* Embedded drag&drop-support
* Automated storing of options (using ini or GConf)
* Controllable through customizable D-Bus service
* Can be used together with compiz' widget-plugin to create a
Dashboard-like feature as seen on OS X
* Uses Cairo and GTK2 for drawing and windowing

Every window manager for linux has the option to set its window layer.

As you see above you have access to the DBUS, which will remove the need to create your own codespace which monitors things.

You also have access to SVG rendering and manipulation....graphs, bars, pies, weird shapes etc.

The Strengths of Rainmeter

Comparing rainmeter to conky or individual screenlet plugins, it becomes apparent the single most defining point of rainmeter is its easily accessable modular configuration layout.

I think that once you create a rendering engine for this layout concept as a screenlet then you have 90% of what rainmeter is.

Followed the HOWTO in the OP and was able to get rainmeter on Mint. I hope that as time progresses Rainmeter will continue to work better and better in Wine on Linux.
