Confusion about Circle Dock versions

Post by jimhabegger »

I'm confused about the latest version, and where to download it.

I need it for a 32-bit laptop and for a 64-bit laptop.

The latest version I can find at circledock.wikidot.com is 0.9.2 Alpha Preview 8.2. It says it's been tested for 64-bit. That's also the latest one I see at sourceforge. I downloaded Alpha Preview 8.1 because of a warning in the notes for 8.2.

There's a version 1.5.6 available on some download sites. I prefer to download applications from the publishers whenever possible, rather than from download sites. One of the download sites says the publisher is Eric Wong at presentthiswindow.wikidot.com. The only link I found there to Circle Dock goes back to circledock.wikidot.com. Another download site links directly back to circledock.wikidot.com, as Eric Wong's homepage. Another download site says the publisher is http://www.rainmeter.net, but I can't find a Circle Dock download anywhere on the Rainmeter site.

I installed the 32-bit version of 1.5.6 from cnet, and the help file says that it's better to use the 64-bit version on a 64-bit computer.

The license agreement that comes up during the installation of 1.5.6 is full of references to 0.9.2, and there is no mention of 1.5.6.

Reading the installed help file and version history has cleared up some of the confusion for me, but I might not be the only one who ever gets confused, and there is a lot I would have liked to know without having to download and install the different versions to find out. I'm planning to submit a suggestion to circledock.wikidot.com to add some information and links for version 1.5.6, but I want to check on some things first.

Does anyone know where the version 1.5.6 on the download sites came from? Is there an original download site? Where?

I'd like to suggest posting some information on this site or on the Circle Dock site, or both, explaining the relationship between 0.9.2 Alpha 8 and later versions, including the difference in licensing.

You will have to wait for Sarge to ring in on this, he is our resident Circle Dock nut. He works with the developer of Circle Dock so he should know about what versions are current.

Apologies for the lateness of my response here.

There are two places of the last known vestiges of the 1.5 series Circle Dock, before markham pulled his code.
The version at the site you mentioned works, but is no where near as advanced as Circle Dock 1.5.*

I maintain these at CNET Downloads.

32bit Download:

64bit Download:

I also support these versions as well as I can at the Circle Dock forum at Donationcoder.com

If you need further assistance with Circle Dock, help can be found there.

Hope this helps

The Sarge

Thank you, Sarge.

I need to know more about the licensing. I prefer to use software that is released under the GPL, as much as possible. It looks like 1.5.6 is released under the Microsoft Public License. Is that right?

In the help files I found this:
Due to our discovering that some unscrupulous individuals have been using Circle Dock source code to produce and market clones, we have made the decision to protect our - and Eric Wong's - investment in time and energy by not publicly releasing any source code, except under special circumstances. We reserve the right to levy a charge for the source code of the current version.
Is that what you mean by saying that markham pulled his code?

The original code is open source.
Markham's source is no longer available due to information you have referenced and other reasons.

More information is available here:

There are other posts concerning the nature of the change and Markham's departure from the project as well :-(
